The application of social work principles and methods in performing assessments and diagnoses based on a recognized manual of mental and emotional disorders or recognized system of problem definition, preventive and early intervention services, and treatment services, including psychosocial interventions, psychotherapy, and counseling for mental disorders, substance abuse, marriage and family dysfunction, and problems caused by social and psychological stress or health impairment.
Virginia licensed clinical social workers who have at least 5 years in practice and attended continuing education specific to supervision in the last 5 years.
An individual who has submitted a supervisory contract and has received board approval to provide clinical services in social work under supervision. Has earned a master degree in clinical social work. Virginia licensed to provide services under the direct supervision of an independently licensed provider.
Clinical social work does not include educational testing.

Only licensed providers can provide mental health services. The Virginia Department of Health Professions closely monitors this process to ensure the protection of clients with standards of education, practice experience, supervision, continued education, and examinations to ensure you have a qualified provider. Counseling, therapy, psychotherapy are all interchangeable terms which can be provided by an LPC, LCSW, SCSW (under direct supervision), and licensed psychologists.
